So I'll be taking a little airplane trip in less than a week.
And while I've gotten over many of my fears/issues/hangups in the last year...
FLYING IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
I'll have my flying pills. But they don't really knock me out. They just kind of take the edge off.
Which is a really, really good thing.
Because the edge is a scary place to be when you're 36,000 feet in the air.
I need distraction. I need something that keeps my mind off of every rattle that I hear.
I need a book recommendation.
And not just a "pretty good" book. I need, like, the best book you've ever read kind of book.
A book that you wouldn't have been able to put down if your method of transportation was about to plunge from the sky to the earth.
Hypothetically, of course.
I don't love historical fiction. Or sci fi.
Unless it was the most wonderful book you've ever read. Then I might reconsider.
If you can't think of one, CALL A FRIEND.
I've read The Help. I've read the Sweet Potato Ladies. I've read Redeeming Love. I've read the Twilights.
(I'm anticipating selections.)
I've tried The Hunger Games - couldn't get into them.
Don't delay. I need time to order if necessary.
Look at it as a win-win. You can get Christmas ideas for the reader in your life.
Oh. And I think it goes without saying, BUT LET'S NOT CHOOSE ANY BOOKS WITH AIRPLANE DISASTERS.
Thank you.

My all time favorite are the Yada-Yada series...which then leads to the House of Hope series. They are awesome! Have a safe and fun trip!

how do you feel about a little bit of spine tingling? if you're up for it, i recommend The Thirteenth Tale (Diane Setterfield). Love, Rosie (Cecelia Ahern) is a sweet, sappy tear jerker - and a modern day epistolary novel. Uglies (Scott Westerfield) is a great post-apocalyptic novel, but you'll probably want all 3 on hand - it's got sci-fi elements, but it's much more anthropological than sci-fi I think. Never Let You Go (Kazuo Ishiguro) is really good too - got the post-apocalyptic, 1984 thing going without all the scifi of the Uglies series.
hope this helps!

I loved all of Randy Alcorns fictional novels....Deadline, Dominion and my all time favorite, Safely Home...however, the last part of this book made me sob and I am not sure you want to have the "ugly cry" while cramped next to someone on the airplane!

I always go back to Vince Flynn. He has a new book and I read it in less than a day.
A little different for you but action packed. I think it might contain some murder, but, oh well. You are looking to be distracted, right?

Anything Cecelia Ahern is good in my book. I also liked Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella. It was light enough and entertaining enough to keep me engaged all the way through.

My mom has a horrible fear of flying, and I gave her Tell No One by Harlan Coben. She said it did the trick and got her mind off the flight. Another good one is Just One Look by Harlan Coben. If you like mysteries check out those two.

Ok...you know your little pills? Take one an hour before you leave and one at take off...you won't mind the flight. I did that for a recent dental appt. and it did the trick.
Books....have you read all the Karen Kingsbury series on the Baxter family? Zion Chronicles? Mark of the Lion series? They're all really good. I'll keep thinking..

Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon. Fantastic for escape reading - and it sounds like escape is exactly what you need!

Water For Elephants
(you may be more current on books than I am)
I read that one about a month ago and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. Really. I read it in about a day and a half.
It was different than anything else I had ever read.

Water for Elephants.

I second the Thirteenth Tale and Water for Elephants. I would add to that list The Book Thief.

My favorite author has got to be Jeffery Archer. Or John Grisham. Or Tom Clancey. But I don't see you as a Tom sort of girl.
I would Totally recommend the last juror by Grisham, or The Broker or Pelican Brief
Or
False impression by Archer or Sons of Fortune. ( I triple puffy heart sons of fortune.).
All worth a read.

These are supposedly children's books, but seriously they are awesome. Try the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson, our whole family devoured them! http://wingfeathersaga.com/

I agree about Harlan Coben novels. Pageturners for sure.

I don't have a huge amount of time to do "fun" reading--I'm in the middle of Laura Bush's autobiography now, but here are a few others that I've enjoyed recently--"Bitsy's Bait & BBQ" by Pamela Morsi, the Shopaholic series--completely fun reading, without having much to really contemplate!! :) I also second the YadaYada series. Fun stuff! Will be praying for your upcoming trip!!

Dorothea Benton Frank. Fun, beachy novels that are compelling enough to turn the page but not too heavy. There are about a half dozen titles or more that are all centered around Charleston, SC, that are semi intertwined. You can start with any of them. Have fun!

My all time favorite book is a historical fiction.. uhh I think.. its fiction and its based from a long time ago.. but its not based on history.. well the main plot isn't it has some wars in it though. Wow that was a lot of rambling.. its a long book so you would def have plenty of book for the trip back. Its called Pillars of the Earth and it was FANTASTIC!!! It was an Oprah book club pick from a while back before she picked all of the new age type stuff. Let me know if you read it.. My sister also says its the best book she has ever read.

I also really loved Water for Elephants.
My all time favorite book that I can read again and again is The Time Traveler's Wife. Love, love, love.
Percy Jackson books are for kids, but they are engaging and quick reading.
My husband LOVES Vince Flynn too. :)

I'm adding my vote to The Thirteenth Tale and The Book Thief. Loved them.

My two recent favorites have been Left to Tell and Still Alice. Both heartbreaking but very interesting!

Home Safe and The Year of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg are two of my favorites. I also just read one written by a friend of mine's mother called Finding Your Way Home (Sara Byrd is the author). Good luck with your flight.

I'm hooked on old classics right now. Pride and Prejudice is next on my list for a re-read. I would also say the Yada Yada series, anything by Karen Kingsbury or John Grisham. Also, I recently read a book by a fellow blogger that was great... here's a link to her blog: http://justbeingme1.blogspot.com/ (You can link from there to Amazon to purchase her book.)

Seconding Water for Elephants and Time Traveler's Wife. Adding The Glass Castle, Kite Runner, and anything by Jodi Picoult.

I agree with the Yada Yada series by Neta Jackson. And the House of Hope series. I'm now reading the Mr Bentley series (the Yada Yada men series)
I love them all.

I would give the Hunger Games another go, the first 4 or 5 chapters were REALLY hard to get into, but after that it was IMPOSSIBLE to put down; besides next year it is going to be on the big screen!
